Missed Last Week's Eclipse? Here's Comes Another!

The first Lunar eclipse of the year took place on June 26. After having to wait nearly seven months for it, many of us are now looking ahead to 2010 solar eclipse number two, which is coming up on July 11.

Pankaj Lakhotia of StockWatch (yes, many believe that the Moon has an effect on the stock market) has more details:

The lunar eclipse [June 26] was seen from the Americas, the Pacific Ocean and eastern Asia; however it was only a partial eclipse of the moon. The lunar eclipse occurs when moon comes behind the Earth and thus is not exposed to light of the sun.

The coming solar eclipse will create a total eclipse along a narrow line in the southern hemisphere. A solar eclipse occurs when Earth, moon and sun come in a single line and moon comes between the Earth and the Sun.

"Queen Of Bollywood" Aishwarya Rai Lands On The Moon

Fans present legendary star of Bollywood cinema with symbolic gift of Lunar real estate

LUNA SOCIETY INDIA (29 June 2010) – A vast parcel of eighty acres in the moon's Lake of Dreams awaits the legendary Queen of Bollywood should she ever venture into the Cosmos.

The acreage was registered late last week in the name of Aishwarya Rai by a pair of her fans from Mumbai. The moon property claim was entered with the Indian office of the Lunar Registry [link], a branch of the International Luna Society, which is headquartered in New York.

The actress, who is married to the popular actor Abhishek Bachchan, has appeared in numerous films, including "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" (1999) and "Devdas" (2002), each of which earned her the Filmfare Best Actress Award, India's equivalent of the Oscar. She received six other Best Actress nominations for her work.

In addition to her filmwork, Miss Rai was named Miss World in 1994. She is widely considered as "the most beautiful woman in the world."

Miss Rai joins another legend of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan, as a notable owner of land on Luna. Coincidentally, both starred together in the landmark film "Devdas."

King Khan was gifted with several acres in the Sea of Tranquillity by his fans, and later obtained the rights to another substantial tract of moon land nearby.

Perhaps the most famous of all lunar property owners, however, was the late "King of Pop," Michael Jackson, who owned a parcel of land estimated at more than a thousand acres. The property was left to his three children in equal amounts according to his estate following his tragic death a year ago.

Al though full details were not released by the Lunar Registry, confirmation was given that the deed and title to the eighty acres was made in the actress' married name, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

The exact location of the property was not given but it is believed to be centrally located in the moon's Lacus Somniorum (Lake of Dreams), which, according to the Lunar Registry's website, is zoned for tourism, operations and industrial development.

The land, according to the company's website, is valued at US$34.25, making the entire parcel worth about Rs 127,355 based on current exchange rates.

Bollywood Superstar Gets Land On The Moon For His Birthday ... Every Year

India's Mid-Day Infomedia reports that Bollywood legend Shahrukh Khan, who celebrates his 44th birthday today (2 November) is among the many Indian nationals owning property on the Moon:

Every year on his birthday, an ardent Shah Rukh Khan fan buys a piece of the moon (you heard that right!) and sends it to him.

SRK confirms, "Yes, an Australian lady buys a little land on the moon for me every year on my birthday. She has been buying it for a while now and I get these certificates from the Lunar Republic Society."

SRK adds that he has met his fan and she keeps in touch with him all year through mails, "She writes me colourful emails (in the sense one line is red, one is blue and so on). I feel blessed to have the love of so many people worldwide."

According to one online lunar real estate agency,
http://www.LunarRegistry.com, the Sea of Tranquility is the most sought-after address on the moon. 1 acre (approximately 43,560 sq ft, or 4,047 sq mtrs) costs US $37.50 (Rs 1758.75) and the actor owns several acres there.

An ownership package includes a beautifully engraved parchment deed, a satellite photograph of the property and an information sheet detailing the geography of your region. An interactive Full Moon Atlas on CD-ROM is available at an additional cost.

Now while there are many websites on the internet (based in the US, UK and Russia) that allow you to buy land on the moon, it doesn't mean you can charge NASA or other space agencies for trespassing when they land on your property.

Imagine This: A Peace Crater For John Lennon

In honor of his birthday and the 40th anniversary of "Give Peace A Chance" and the famed Bed-Ins For Peace, a crater on the Moon has been named for musician and peace activist John Lennon.

The news was announced simultaneously on the ImaginePeace.com and Lunar Geographic Society websites. ImaginePeace.com is the official website of Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, and serves as the vehicle for her continued anti-war efforts in the spirit of her late husband.

According to the official press release:

The crater, which is located in the Moon’s Lacus Somniorum (“Lake of Dreams”) district, has been given the honorary designation as the John Lennon Peace Crater on the occasion of the 69th anniversary of Mr. Lennon’s birth.

Forty years ago, in March 1969, Mr. Lennon and his wife, the artist Yoko Ono, staged their first “Bed-In For Peace” in Amsterdam. The event was followed in June of the same year by a second “Bed-In” in MontrĂ©al, during which Mr. Lennon composed and recorded the anthem “Give Peace A Chance.”

The John Lennon Peace Crater is part of the Daniell crater group, named for John Frederic Daniell (1790-1845), a London-born physicist, meteorologist and professor of chemistry. It is the largest of three satellite craters to Daniell, and rests in the heart of the Moon’s magnificent Lake of Dreams.

ChiTrib: Buzz Aldrin Raps With Snoop, Prefers Sinatra

Luis Arroyave blogs in the Chicago Tribune re: the second man on the Moon's ability to distinguish the front of the Moon from its backside, his tastes in music, and his apparent inability to laugh at his own jokes:

Buzz Aldrin looks at a large screen in the Adler Planetarium on Wednesday and gives a brief take on what it is we're looking at.

"That's the front of the moon," he says, almost as if he's showing his vacation pictures. "The back of the moon looks pretty different. It's not as hospitable."

Aldrin would make one hell of a Planetarium tour guide.

ABC News: After Apollo: Water on the Moon?

Ned Potter reports on ABCnews.com that NASA will crash a craft on the Moon early this October:

"If we find water there, it will change the course of exploration," said Rusty Hunt of NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif. "If there's water near the south pole, we'd go there. The people who settled the old West were able to live off the land, so to speak, and we'd do the same."

Hunt is a flight director for a mission called LCROSS (Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite), which was launched in June, and is scheduled to crash into the floor of a crater near the lunar south pole on the morning of Oct. 9.

This mission is being decried by some as a "bombing" of the Moon, taking place on noted space enthusiast (and UFO witness) John Lennon's birthday.

Apollo Lunar Mission Was "Made In North Alabama"

The TimesDaily of Florence, Ala., details how this rural region in the South played a key role in the American space program:

When Eugene Cagle sat in his Rogersville home watching television on July 20, 1969, he was overcome with pride that the work he and his team had put in helping to develop and construct the massive Saturn V rocket had been worth the long hours.

Cagle, 83, is retired from NASA, but he was among those who worked to bring together the engineering needed to build a rocket that would carry a man to the moon. Cagle was stationed at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville.
